We all know drinking water is important for our health, but do you know how much water you should be consuming throughout the day?
There have been many studies on how much water you should drink every day with different recommendations. Your water needs can actually depend on many factors, such as where you live, your health and how active you are. Even though there isn’t a certain set amount to fit everyone, just knowing more about your body’s can help you work out how much you should be drinking.
Why water is important
First off, let’s look at the health benefits of water. Water is your body’s main chemical component, making up about 60% of your body weight. Water is so important because every system in your body depends on it. It flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides moisture for the ear nose and throat tissues.
If you don’t drink enough water, it can make you dehydrated, which means there isn’t enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Mild dehydration can cause a person to feel very tired and lethargic.
You lose water through your breath, perspiration, urine and bowel movements. Because of this, you must replenish through your diet throughout the day and drink plenty of water. The average amount of fluids a male should consume is about three litres a day, which is about eight glasses.
In a sauna environment
It is very important that you drink plenty of water before and after entering a wet or dry sauna. On average a person loses up to one pint of water during a regular sauna session. If your body loses that much water so quickly, it causes dehydration.
So it’s exceptionally important to drink a good amount of fluids before enjoying a sauna session, just to ensure that your body has enough water to keep your body functioning properly. As one of Covent Garden’s renowned men-only saunas, this is something we encourage all of our clientèle to do.
After a sauna session, it’s best to drink two more glasses of water to rehydrate and avoid dehydration.
